SRF Cavity Development at NSCL

A number of cavities have been developed and prototyped by NSCL, in collaboration with Jefferson Laboratory, INFN Milano, and INFN Legnaro. The cavities are of especial interest for the proposed Rare Isotope Accelerator.

Multi-Cell Elliptical Cavities

The cavity design was done by INFN Milano and Jefferson Laboratory. The resonant frequency is 805 MHz. Single-cell and multi-cell prototypes were fabricated by Jefferson Laboratory and NSCL. Three 6-cell cavity prototypes have been fabricated and tested. Testing was completed in 2003, with all 3 cavities meeting the design goal for gradient and quality factor. Two of these 6-cell cavities were installed and tested in a prototype cryomodule in 2004.

Half-Wave Resonators

The cavity design was done by NSCL. A prototype was fabricated and tested at NSCL in 2002; the electron beam welding was done by industry. The resonant frequency is 322 MHz. The prototype cavity exceeded the design goal for gradient and quality factor. The half-wave prototype has been equipped with a helium vessel and tuner for testing in a prototype cryomodule.

Quarter-Wave Resonators

The cavity design was done by INFN Legnaro and NSCL. Two prototype cavities were fabricated and tested at NSCL in 2003; the electron beam welding was done by industry. Another cavity was fabricated by industry and tested at Legnaro. The resonant frequencies are 80.5 MHz and 161 MHz. The prototype cavities reached the design goal for gradient and quality factor. A quarter-wave prototype has been equipped with a helium vessel, tuner, and mechanical damper for testing in a prototype cryomodule.
