    NSCL experiment 06002 is undergoing preparations on the new S2/RFFS beamline.

  • 21-Jan-08: Winter 2007 Beta Decay Campaign Completed
    NSCL experiments 07003, 07034, and 07509 utilized the BCS and SeGA on the new S2/RFFS beamline.

    Combination of RF Fragment Separator, BCS and SeGA used to study half-lives of N=Z nuclides important for rp-process. Data will comprise Ph.D. thesis of J. Stoker

  • 14-Dec-06: R.R. Weerasiri successfully defends his M.S. Thesis
    Weerasiri has taken a research position with Technova in Lansing, MI

  • 25-Nov-06: 2006 Beta Campaign completed
    Three beta-decay experiments were run during the Oct-Nov 2006 time period. The BCS was used in conjuction with 16 Ge detectors from SeGA. These were the last experiments in the N3 Vault.

  • 20-Mar-06: Andrew Davies successfully defends his Ph.D. Thesis
    Andrew is working with the State Department in Washington, D.C.

  • 08-Mar-06: Andrew Stuchbery on two-week visit to the NSCL
    Andrew will be working with Andrew Davies to complete manuscripts related to the excited state g factor measurements on 38,40S. We will also plan for the upcoming PAC-30 meeting.

  • 13-Dec-05: Bryan Tomlin successfully defends his Ph.D. Thesis
    Bryan has accepted an NRC post-doc position with the neutron activation group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD.

  • 09-Dec-05: BCS in N109
    NSCL experiments 05028 and 03034 are complete. The BCS system has been returned to the N109 lab.

  • 27-Nov-05: BCS-NERO Campaign
    The Beta Counting System was installed in the N3 vault at the beginning of November 2005 to run a campaign of beta-delayed neutron experiments. NSCL Expts. 03034 (Woehr) and 05028 (Kratz) are now nearly complete. Detection system was BCS + Ge planar, surrounded by NERO. Three SeGA detectors were placed upstream for isomer decay identification.

  • 27-Jul-05: NMR magnet once again in N3 vault
    The beta-NMR magnet will be used in upcoming experiment 05015 to study the ground state magnetic moment of 58Cu.

  • 06-May-05: NMR magnet moved to N3 vault
    The beta-NMR magnet will be used in upcoming experiment 03015 to study the g-factors of isomeric states in the neutron-rich Ni isotopes.

  • 15-Mar-05: Expt 02001 Completed
    Cu-57 produced by proton pickup from Ni-58 primary beam. NMR scanned to deduce ground state magnetic moment.

  • 08-Dec-04: Sean Liddick successfully defends his Ph.D. Thesis
    Sean has taken a post-doctoral position with the UNIRIB group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

  • 12-Mar-04: Exp. 01039-II was successfully completed
    Beta-NMR system will remain in S1, VME electronics moved to N109 for testing.

  • 09-Mar-04: Exp. 01039-II is running
    Phase of exp. 01039 is running in vault S1. Aim: measurement of the polarization and the ground state magnetic moment of K-35 fragments.

  • 22-Feb-04: New section in the Beta website
    Elog server is installed in one of the groups' PCs. A logbook for 01039 has been created, more to come.

  • 22-Feb-04: Optics file test in S1
    A test with a Kr-78 beam was run in order to confirm that the beam optics file for the upcoming experiment 01039 is correct. The beam spot observed on the viewer with a remotely controlled camera was delivered at dead-center.

  • 03-Nov-03: Experimenters are back from ANU
    The people are now back with a successful set of data from the recent experiment at ANU.

  • 09-Oct-03: Experiment at ANU in Canberra.
    TJM,SNL,ADD and BET are participating in an experiment at the Nuclear Lab of the Australian National University in Canberra. The experiment is part of an ongoing collaboration with Dr. Andrew Stuchbery and aims to the measurement of the transient magnetic field at intermediate beam energies

  • 17-Aug-03: Experiment at LBL.
    TJM is participating in two experiments at the 88" Cyclotron Lab at Berkeley (g factors of46Ca and 76Kr)

  • 14-Aug-03: Experiment at ANL.
    SNL and BET are participating in the 965 experiment at Argonne National Lab (56Ti measurement)

  • 30-Jul-03: TRIUMF experiment.
    Visit at TRIUMF in Vancouver for an experiment at the LTNO facility. A measurement of the magnetic moment of 75Ga is expected.

  • 19-May-03: The spring campaign has ended.
    The b-decay spring campaign - experiments 01006, 02012, 02028, 02032, 02004, 01027 and 01015 - ended on May 11, and all of the post-experiment calibrations have been completed. The beta counting system has been dismounted and put into storage while we wait for lab space. The b-NMR system is being reassembled in the S1 vault for use during the summer running period.

  • 19-Apr-03: Experiment 02004 started.
    Experiment 02004, a search for the N=34 shell closure using the beta counting system with the SeGA array, is currently underway. This is the first of three experiments in quick succession that will finish our spring experimental campaign.

  • 17-Apr-03: New Beam Schedule online (internal use only).

  • 11-Apr-03: Beta Counting System and SeGA.
    With experiments 02028 and 02032 completed, NERO
    is being dismounted. The beta counting system is being moved back to a position at the center of the SeGA array for the final three experiments of the spring campaign.

  • 19-Mar-03: Beta Counting System and NERO.
    The beta counting system and the SeGA array are still coupled to NERO
    in N3 vault. Experiment 02028 is in progress.

  • 24-Feb-03: Beta Counting System and NERO.
    The beta counting system and the SeGA array are now coupled to NERO in the N3 vault.


  • 20-Feb-03: Eexp. 02020 (phase I) completed.
    Several foil combinations (Au and Fe) of various thicknesses were tested in order to study energy losses of beam fragments. Collected information will be used to optimize the experimental setup for the main experiment (Phase II). The test takes place in N4 vault.


  • 17-Feb-03: Exp. 01006 (100Sn) completed.
    The beta counting system has been coupled to the SeGA array for the study of the 100Sn and 102Sb nuclei. With these experiments complete, we'll begin setting up for experiments 02028 and 02032 using the beta counting system with NERO.
